Christ’s Schedule for His Last Days Before the Cross

by Pastor Robert Henderson

Matthew 16:13-23

Jesus is now in the last days of His public ministry. Everything in the life of Christ was planned and timed, before the foundation of the world.

Luke 22:22-- “And truly the Son of man goeth, as it was determined: but woe unto that man by whom he is betrayed!”

Acts 2:22-23-- “Ye men of Israel, hear these words; Jesus of Nazareth, a man approved of God among you by miracles and wonders and signs, which God did by him in the midst of you, as ye yourselves also know: 2 Him, being delivered by the determinate counsel and foreknowledge of God, ye have taken, and by wicked hands have crucified and slain.”

Acts 4:27-28-- “For of a truth against thy holy child Jesus, whom thou hast anointed, both Herod, and Pontius Pilate, with the Gentiles, and the people of Israel, were gathered together,  For to do whatsoever thy hand and thy counsel determined before to be done.”

1 Peter 1:20-- “Who verily was foreordained before the foundation of the world, but was manifest in these last times for you.”

Ephesians 1:4-- “According as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love.”

2 Timothy 1:9-- “Who hath saved us, and called us with an holy calling, not according to our works, but according to his own purpose and grace, which was given us in Christ Jesus before the world began.”

Titus 1:2-- “In hope of eternal life, which God, that cannot lie, promised before the world began.”

His birth was timed. Note the following verse:

Galatians 4:4-- “But when the fulness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, made of a woman, made under the law.”

Fulness: The end of a pre-appointed time, set by the God before the world began.

His death was timed.

John 2:4--“Jesus saith unto her, Woman, what have I to do with thee? mine hour is not yet come.”

John 7:6-- “Then Jesus said unto them, My time is not yet come: but your time is alway ready.”

John 7:8-- “Go ye up unto this feast: I go not up yet unto this feast; for my time is not yet full come.”

John 7:30-- “Then they sought to take him: but no man laid hands on him, because his hour was not yet come.”

John 8:20--“These words spake Jesus in the treasury, as he taught in the temple: and no man laid hands on him; for his hour was not yet come.”

John 10:39-- “Therefore they sought again to take him: but he escaped out of their hand.”

John 11:57-- “Now both the chief priests and the Pharisees had given a commandment, that, if any man knew where he were, he should shew it, that they might take him.”

Mark 14:1-- “After two days was the feast of the passover, and of unleavened bread: and the chief priests and the scribes sought how they might take him by craft, and put him to death.”

John 7:44-- “And some of them would have taken him; but no man laid hands on him.”

Matthew 26:18-- “And he said, Go into the city to such a man, and say unto him, The Master saith, My time is at hand; I will keep the passover at thy house with my disciples.”

Mark 14:41--“And he cometh the third time, and saith unto them, Sleep on now, and take your rest: it is enough, the hour is come; behold, the Son of man is betrayed into the hands of sinners.”

 His resurrection was timed.

Matthew 16:21-- “…and be raised again the third day.

Every time He tells them what is going to happen, He tells them He will be raised the third day.

He begins to show the disciples before hand what will happen to Him. He gives them His schedule. There are several verses that we need to read to get the entire schedule.

Read Matthew 16:13-22.

Matthew 16:21-- “From that time forth began Jesus to shew unto his disciples, how that he must go unto Jerusalem, and suffer many things of the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and be raised again the third day.”

Matthew 17:22-23-- “And while they abode in Galilee, Jesus said unto them, The Son of man shall be betrayed into the hands of men:  And they shall kill him, and the third day he shall be raised again. And they were exceeding sorry.”

Matthew 20:17-19-- “And Jesus going up to Jerusalem took the twelve disciples apart in the way, and said unto them,  Behold, we go up to Jerusalem; and the Son of man shall be betrayed unto the chief priests and unto the scribes, and they shall condemn him to death,  And shall deliver him to the Gentiles to mock, and to scourge, and to crucify him: and the third day he shall rise again.”

Read Mark 8:27-33.

Mark 8:31-- “And he began to teach them, that the Son of man must suffer many things, and be rejected of the elders, and of the chief priests, and scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise again.”

Read Mark 9:30-32.

Mark 9:31-- “For he taught his disciples, and said unto them, The Son of man is delivered into the hands of men, and they shall kill him; and after that he is killed, he shall rise the third day.”

Mark 10:32-34-- “And they were in the way going up to Jerusalem; and Jesus went before them: and they were amazed; and as they followed, they were afraid. And he took again the twelve, and began to tell them what things should happen unto him,  Saying, Behold, we go up to Jerusalem; and the Son of man shall be delivered unto the chief priests, and unto the scribes; and they shall condemn him to death, and shall deliver him to the Gentiles:  And they shall mock him, and shall scourge him, and shall spit upon him, and shall kill him: and the third day he shall rise again.”

Read Luke 9:18-22.

Luke 9:22-- “Saying, The Son of man must suffer many things, and be rejected of the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be slain, and be raised the third day.”

Luke 9:44-- “Let these sayings sink down into your ears: for the Son of man shall be delivered into the hands of men.”

Luke 17:24-25-- “For as the lightning, that lighteneth out of the one part under heaven, shineth unto the other part under heaven; so shall also the Son of man be in his day.   But first must he suffer many things, and be rejected of this generation.”

Luke 18:31-33-- “Then he took unto him the twelve, and said unto them, Behold, we go up to Jerusalem, and all things that are written by the prophets concerning the Son of man shall be accomplished.  For he shall be delivered unto the Gentiles, and shall be mocked, and spitefully entreated, and spitted on:  And they shall scourge him, and put him to death: and the third day he shall rise again.”

This is what lies ahead for Jesus in chronological order.

1.  “…must go unto Jerusalem…” Matthew 16:21; Matthew 20:18; Mark 10:33; Luke 18:31.

Deuteronomy 16:16-- “Three times in a year shall all thy males appear before the LORD thy God in the place which he shall choose; in the feast of unleavened bread, [the Passover Luke 22:1-- “ Now the feast of unleavened bread drew nigh, which is called the Passover.”] and in the feast of weeks, and in the feast of tabernacles: and they shall not appear before the LORD empty.”

The Passover was to be observed in a place that God would choose.

2 Chronicles 6:6-- “But I have chosen Jerusalem, that my name might be there…”

John 2:13-- “And the Jews' passover was at hand, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem.”

Christ is the lamb of God:  John1:29-- “The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.”

Christ is referred to the Passover: 1 Corinthians 5:7-- “Purge out therefore the old leaven, that ye may be a new lump, as ye are unleavened. For even Christ our passover is sacrificed for us.”

At Jerusalem this year, Christ the lamb of God will be God’s Passover lamb that will be sacrificed on the cross for the sins of the whole world.

Luke 19:28-- “And when he had thus spoken, he went before, ascending up to Jerusalem.”

2.  He will be “…betrayed into the hands of men” (Matthew 17:22.)

He shall be “…delivered into the hands of men…” (Mark 9:31).

Luke 9:44-- “Let these sayings sink down into your ears: for the Son of man shall be delivered into the hands of men.”

Who are these men?

The chief priest and the scribes.  Matthew 20:18; Mark 10:33.

3.  He will suffer many things at the hands of these men.

Matthew 16:21;  Luke 9:22; Mark 10:34-- “…and they shall mock him… and shall spit upon him…”

Matthew 26:67-- “Then did they spit in his face, and buffeted him; and others smote him with the palms of their hands.”

4.  They will reject Him.  Mark 8:31; Luke 17:25.

5.  They will condemn Him to die. Matthew 20:18; Matthew 27:1; Mark 10:33.

6.  He will be delivered to the Gentiles. Matthew 20:19; Mark 10:33; Luke 18:22.

Who are these gentiles?

Matthew 27:2-- “And when they had bound him, they led him away, and delivered him to Pontius Pilate the governor.”

Read Luke 23:1-12.

Luke 23:6-7-- “When Pilate heard of Galilee, he asked whether the man were a Galilaean.  And as soon as he knew that he belonged unto Herod's jurisdiction, he sent him to Herod, who himself also was at Jerusalem at that time.”

7.  The gentiles will mock Him, spitefully use Him and spit on Him.

Luke 18:32-33--  “For he shall be delivered unto the Gentiles, and shall be mocked, and spitefully entreated, and spitted on:  And they shall scourge him, and put him to death: and the third day he shall rise again.”

Luke 23;11-- “And Herod with his men of war set him at nought, and mocked him, and arrayed him in a gorgeous robe, and sent him again to Pilate.”

Naught--to despise, lightly esteem. They treated Him as worthless, no good.

8.  Jesus is returned to Pilate. Luke 23:11.

Pilate wants to release Jesus because several times he has said, “I find no fault in Him.”

Luke 23:4-- “Then said Pilate to the chief priests and to the people, I find no fault in this man.”

Luke 23:14-- “Said unto them, Ye have brought this man unto me, as one that perverteth the people: and, behold, I, having examined him before you, have found no fault in this man touching those things whereof ye accuse him.”

John 18:38-- “Pilate saith unto him, What is truth? And when he had said this, he went out again unto the Jews, and saith unto them, I find in him no fault at all.”

John 19:4-- “Pilate therefore went forth again, and saith unto them, Behold, I bring him forth to you, that ye may know that I find no fault in him.”

John 19:6-- “When the chief priests therefore and officers saw him, they cried out, saying, Crucify him, crucify him. Pilate saith unto them, Take ye him, and crucify him: for I find no fault in him.”

Matthew 27:20-- “But the chief priests and elders persuaded the multitude that they should ask Barabbas, and destroy Jesus.”

Matthew 27:21-22-- “…Pilate saith unto them, What shall I do then with Jesus which is called Christ? They all say unto him, Let him be crucified.  And the governor said, Why, what evil hath he done? But they cried out the more, saying, Let him be crucified.”

Matthew 27:16-- “And they had then a notable prisoner, called Barabbas.

Luke 23:25-- “And he released unto them him that for sedition and murder was cast into prison, whom they had desired; but he delivered Jesus to their will.”

Sedition--rioting, uproar, uprising, dissension.

Mark 15:7-- “And there was one named Barabbas, which lay bound with them that had made insurrection with him, who had committed murder in the insurrection.”

9.  Pilot will have Jesus scourged. Matthew 20:19; Mark 10:34; Luke 18:33.

Mark 15:15-- “And so Pilate, willing to content the people, released Barabbas unto them, and delivered Jesus, when he had scourged him, to be crucified.”

Matthew 27:26-- “Then released he Barabbas unto them: and when he had scourged Jesus, he delivered him to be crucified.”

10.  Delivered Him to be crucified. Matthew 20:19 - the Gentiles crucified Him.

Matthew 27:27-30-- “Then the soldiers of the governor took Jesus into the common hall, and gathered unto him the whole band of soldiers.  And they stripped him, and put on him a scarlet robe.  And when they had platted a crown of thorns, they put it upon his head, and a reed in his right hand: and they bowed the knee before him, and mocked him, saying, Hail, King of the Jews!  And they spit upon him, and took the reed, and smote him on the head.”

Other references to His death: “…be killed…” (Matthew 16:21; 17:23; Mark 8:31; 9:31; 10:34); “…put to death…” (Luke 18:33), “…be slain…” (Luke 9:22).

Matthew 27:26-27-- “Then released he Barabbas unto them: and when he had scourged Jesus, he delivered him to be crucified.  Then the soldiers of the governor took Jesus into the common hall, and gathered unto him the whole band of soldiers.”

Matthew 27:28-31-- “And they stripped him, and put on him a scarlet robe.  And when they had platted a crown of thorns, they put it upon his head, and a reed in his right hand: and they bowed the knee before him, and mocked him, saying, Hail, King of the Jews!  And they spit upon him, and took the reed, and smote him on the head. And after that they had mocked him, they took the robe off from him, and put his own raiment on him, and led him away to crucify him.”

11.  Matthew 27:33-36-- “And when they were come unto a place called Golgotha, that is to say, a place of a skull,  They gave him vinegar to drink mingled with gall: and when he had tasted thereof, he would not drink.  And they crucified him, and parted his garments, casting lots: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, They parted my garments among them, and upon my vesture did they cast lots.  And sitting down they watched him there.”
